The Angels – a new project at the National Theatre

The opera/musical show about the musical angels with devilish inclinations - a joint project of the National Theatre, Czech Radio and the Children Opera Prague - is entering the last stage of preparation. The opening night is scheduled for June 1 (International Childrens' Day) at the Shed space of the National Theatre as part of the Prague Spring music festival. Further performances will take place on June 2, 3, 7 and 8, the tickets are already on sale.
The music was composed by Lukáš Hurník, libretto is by Petr Čenský. The authors say The Angels could be perceived as a fairy-tale, an entertaining multigenre show and/or the parable about love, power, youth and freedom, and the conflict between the "old" and the "new" world. In one word, a project designed for three generations of listeners.
Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jan Kučera, is currently recording the accompaniment, as the production will be using pre-recorded music - except for two pretty complicated saxophone parts that will be played live by Kateřina Stupková and Pavel Fiedler. Hurník's music style is a mix of a range of musical styles and genres. "From Dvořák to Madonna, from aleatorics to funk." There is also plenty of electronics, rock "drum and bass" music, funk, rap etc, plus quotes from Dvořák, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Deep Purple and Rolling Stones. The show is directed by Gabriela Haukvicová, set design for this visual show with projection and lighting effects is by Renáta Weidlichová. Daniel Hůlka will celebrate his birthday (*1. 6. 1968) singing the main Devil character Asmodeus on the opening night. The lead role of the Angel Asbeel will be performed by Michal Klamo whom the audiences could see in the musical Miss Saigon and others.
