The South Bohemian [Jihočeské] Theatre in České Budějovice staged in the framework of its Whirlwind [Smršť] project a first production of the winning entry of 2008 Radok Competition. Slovak playwright Vladislava Fekete’s play Short Cuts [Krátke spojenia] opened on 6 May, in Czech translation and staged by P. Štindl. A review in the Slovak daily SME commented on both the successful production and interesting staging of the author’s stage directions:
„The director Petr Štindl explored the opportunities offered by Vladislava Fekete’s text and added a character of a kind of guide to the production offering the audience the stage directions that would otherwise remain hidden from the audience.
That would be pity as both their wit and their ironic detachment give the play its originality and create a counterbalance to the dark Balkan fate underlying the plot.
The character is both a commentator and a cameraman shooting the action onstage. His images are shown on four monitors backstage. That underlies the feeling of the intruding ubiquitous modern technology that allows to broadcast sound and image from everywhere and anywhere but cannot stop the “short circuiting” in personal life.”
