Petr Zelenka between Leeds, New York and Washington

These were two busy weeks for Petr Zelenka in May while he was travelling around with his Theremin. First, he was preparing a rehearsed reading of the play for the European translation project JANUS (Julek Neumann and Jodie Marshall) at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. In the end, he had to direct the reading unexpectedly himself and he even managed to teach the main actor how to play the non-contact instrument thereminvox. After a successful performance on 13 May 2006 and a heated Sunday morning discussion, Zelenka returned to Prague only to leave the day after for New York. There, his play was read as part of the 5th Year of the Czech Plays in Translation Cycle (run together by the New York Immigrant´s Theatre Project and the Theatre Institute in Prague) at the famous Joe Papp Public Theatre. The play was directed by Marcy Arlin (translation by Štěpán Šimek) and featured leading New York actors, including Thom Rivera as Theremin, Tibor Feldman as Goldberg and Christian Baskous in the role of Hoffman. After the show, the audience had an opportunity to play the thereminvox. For the first time, there was a reading of a Czech play in English at the Czech Embassy in Washington on 17 May 2006, also with the author Petr Zelenka directing. The lead role in Theremin was created by the actor of the local Scena Theatre Robert McNamara.
